Mock-Trial

You point your accusing finger at me,

         and you ask insistently:

                                                    “How do you plead?”

                                                    “How do you plead?”

How do I plead?

How do I plead?

Do you really want to know

                                how I do plead?

I plead “not guilty,”

              by reason of your insanity.

                                          That's how I plead.

I plead “not guilty,”

because that is the way I feel.

But, ultimately,

        ultimately,

       I plead “not guilty,”

because it, rather, suits me well

                                                    to make such a plea,

    “not guilt,”

    “not guilty,”

                          when the entire world seems

                                         to stand united against me.

                                                                 Against me.

I plead “not guilty,”

              ultimately,

              ultimately,

                               though, in truth, I know,

it matters not in the least,

                                                                    how I plead. -

I am already...condemned.
